After the Sex Pistols split in 1978, he and drummer Paul Cook formed The Professionals, a hard rock band. They recorded one album before dissolving in 1981 due to a terrible car accident while on tour in the United States.

I Didn’t See It Coming, the title of The Professionals’ debut album, was ironic. From 1982 through 1985, he was a member of Chequered Past (led by Michael Des Barres).
