Sloane Stephens is an American tennis player who plays professionally. Sloane Stephens was the 2017 US Open Champion. After Wimbledon in 2018, Sloane reached a career-high ranking of No.3 in the world.

Early life

Sloane Stephens was born on March 20, 1993, in Plantation, Florida, the United State of America. Sloane’s zodiac sign is Pisces and she is currently 28 years old. Moreover, the tennis player is of African-American descent and has American nationality.

In addition, she is the daughter of Sybil Smith and John Stephens. Sloane’s parents were accomplished athletes. Sloane’s mother was the first African-American woman to be named a first-team All-American swimmer in Division I history.  Her mother Sybil is enshrined in the Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame and recognized as the greatest swimmer in the history of the university. Sloane’s father was Pro Bowl running back for the New England Patriots in the National Football League.

After many arrests of her’s father in 1994, Sloane’s mother divorced Sloane’s father when she was a baby. After that, she was raised by her mother and her stepfather, Sheldon Farrell at Fresno in California. Talking about her siblings, she has a younger half-brother, Shawn Farrell, who played baseball and football at Notre Dame High School outside of Los Angeles. Sloane began playing tennis when she was nine years old. In 2004, she moved to Florida and trained at the Evert Tennis Academy and the Nick Saviano High-Performance Tennis Academy. From a young age, she was supported by her parents in every step.

Junior career

Sloane Stephens’ junior career began in 2006 when she was 13 years old when she completed low-level events on the ITF Junior Circuit. At the 2008 US Open, she had her first breakthrough result. She won her first two tournaments of the year, the Grade 1 USTA International Spring Championships and the Grade A Italian Open, in 2009. In her early career, the year 2010 was the most successful. The athlete teamed up with Timea Babos and won the doubles title at each of the three majors in which they competed.

Professional career

Her professional career began on the ITF Women’s Circuit in late 2007. In the summer of 2008, Sloane and her partner Christina McHale win their first professional doubles title at a low-level ITF $10k event in Wichita. In addition, she competed in World Team Tennis as a member of the New York Buzz in the middle of 2009. She also qualified for Indian Wells Open in march 2010. Sloane won her first career main draw match against Lucie Hradecka before losing to defending champion Vera Zvonareva. The clay-court season began in 2011. At the Zamparini Gioielli Cup in Italy, the tennis player won her first professional singles title. She qualified for the French Open and won her first Grand Slam championship in a singles event. Sloane was ranked among the top 100 women’s tennis players in the world.

The player was able to compete in WTA Tour-level events after improving her ranking. She had her best result at a Grand Slam competition in the French Open. Sloane made her Wimbledon main draw debut in the third round, defeating Petra Cetkovská. She moved into the top 50 of the WTA ranking for the top 50 of the WTA rankings for the first time after a series of successive victories. During the Australian hard-court season in 2013, she put on a remarkable performance, defeating Serena Williams. Sloane achieved a career-high ranking of no.17 after losing to world no.1 Victoria Azarenka in the semi-final. She won her first WTA title in 2015 at the City Open, where she finished as the competition’s champion.

Tennis player injury

The tennis player had a left foot injury after the 2016 Rio Olympics. Doctors advised her to take a break from the sport to rest and recover. Sloane spent 11 months without playing tennis until returning in 2017. She returned for Wimbledon, and 2017 was a difficult year for her. During the second round of the US Open, she faced her first surprising defeat in a match against Dominika Cibulkova.

She defeated Julia Gorges in the fourth round and advanced to her first US Open quarterfinal. Sloane won her first Grand Slam singles title at the US Open after defeating Anastasija Sevastova and the Madison Keys.

2019: Rankings drop, out of the top 20

In 2018, she lost to Anastasija Sevastova at the US Open and was unable to defend her title. She recovered herself after losing the first eight games of the match against Karolina Plkovas and won the match in three sets. The athlete finished the season as the world’s no.6 athlete. From May 2019, she began to train with Sven Groeneveld, former coach of Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic, Monica Seles, and many others. In the same year, she got defeated in several matches. As a result, she fell out of the top 10 shortly before the US Open. After that, she fell out of the top 20 upon losing her 2018 WTA Finals rankings points near the end of the season.

2020-2021: Struggles with form continue, and she drops out of the Top 60.

In 2020-2021, she continued to struggles with her form. At Brisbane, she lost the first round to the qualifier. She showed an improvement in the form at the 2020 US Open. But struggle to maintain her ranking. In 2021, Mutua Madrid Open, she reached the second round. But that was not enough to keep her position and she dropped out of the top 60 before the 2021 Italian Open (tennis).
