During the 1998-1999 NBA season, Shawn showed up to training camp weighing 280 pounds. Despite weight problems, the basketball player averaged a career-high 20.5 points along with 9.2 rebounds a game.

Before the 2000-2001 NBA season, Kemp was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers but due to his weight problems, he failed to show his performances. Also, Shawn Kemp won a gold medal with the US national team in the 1994 FIBA World Championship.

In the 2002-2003 season, he signed with Orlando Magic and he took the team to reach the NBA Playoffs. The Magic faced the Detroit Pistons in the 1st round but failed to win in 7 more games. Unfortunately, after his season with the Orlando Magic, Shawn failed to land an NBA contract.
