Rupert Sanders started his commercial production career under Tony Kaye. Before Kaye suggested he attempt directing, he had mostly done art direction. He has also directed numerous television commercials, notably The Life for Halo 3: ODST, which earned him two Golden Lions at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

“Snow White and the Huntsman,” Sanders’ first feature film, was released in the United States in early June 2012. The film cost $170 million to make, including an eight-figure marketing budget, and it made $20.3 million on its first day in the United States. The film has so far grossed $396,592,829 at the movie office.

After turning down the opportunity to direct the fifth installment of the” Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise, Sanders helmed a film version of the science fiction manga franchise “Ghost in the Shell,” with Avi Arad and Steven Paul producing and Scarlett Johansson starring in the lead role which was released in late March of 2017.

Sanders said in June 2018 that he would direct Johansson again in Rub & Tug, an upcoming biopic of Dante “Tex” Gill and his girlfriend Cynthia Bruno, with Johansson playing Gill.

However, the film has been stuck in development hell since Johansson dropped out after the transgender community objected to a female actor playing a trans guy.  Sanders will helm a reimagining of “The Crow” in April 2022, with Bill Skarsgrd acting as Eric Draven / The Crow.
