Pepe began playing football with local Corinthians Alagoano. And, when he was 18 years old, he was able to move to Portugal to sign with Marítimo in Madeira. He spent the vast majority of his first season with the B-team.

He was then promoted to the main squad for the 2002–03 season and was able to play in several positions including defensive midfielder. And, shortly before the club sealed a treble of the league, cup, and UEFA Champions League, he was able to sign for Porto in May 2004.

Then, during the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, he often played as a defensive midfielder by national coach Carlos Queiroz. Again, in Euro 2012 under manager Paulo Bento, he got the opportunity to score in the second group game against Denmark.
