Patty Mills is a professional basketball player from Australia. Patty Mills plays in the point guard position for the Brooklyn Nets of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Early Life

Patty Mills was born on the 11th of August 1988, in Canberra, Australia. He is an Australian by nationality and his full name is Patrick Sammy MillsMeanwhile, he has a birth sign of Leo and is 35 years old. He has his belief in the Christian religion and he belongs to Aboriginal Australian.

He was born to his father Benny Mills and his mother Yvonne Mills. As a child, Patty grew up in an athletic environment. His father is a Torres Strait Islander while his mother is an Aborigine from the Ynunga people of South Australia. Moreover, he seems to be the only child of his parents and has never shared any information regarding his siblings.

Education

He attended high school at the Marist College Canberra in Australia. After completing high school, he received a basketball scholarship to attend Saint Mary’s College of California in the United States, where he played college basketball for the Saint Mary’s Gaels from 2007 to 2009.

While at Saint Mary’s, he was a standout player and helped lead the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances. He was also named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year in 2009. After his sophomore year, he declared for the NBA draft and was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round.

Professional Career

Patty Mills entered the NBA draft in 2009 and was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 55th overall pick. He spent his rookie season primarily playing in the NBA Development League for the Blazers’ affiliate team, the Idaho Stampede, before making his NBA debut in April 2010. Moreover, he played for the Trail Blazers for two seasons, from 2009 to 2011.

While in Portland, he served as a backup point guard, playing behind All-Star guard Brandon Roy. He was known for his energy and scoring ability off the bench, as well as his tenacious defense.

In the 2010-2011 season, Mills appeared in 64 games for the Blazers, averaging 5.5 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 12.2 minutes per game. He also set a franchise record by scoring 34 points in a game against the Dallas Mavericks in April 2011.

Melbourne Tigers

As a result of the 2011 NBA lockout, he relocated back to Australia to play in the NBL. He reportedly declined large offers from several European clubs before joining the Melbourne Tigers on August 29, 2011. On October 7, 2011, he scored 28 points in the Tigers’ season-opening game against the Sydney Kings.

Xinjiang Flying Tigers

On November 20, the Melbourne Tigers released Patty after receiving a $1 million offer from the Xinjiang Flying Tigers, a Chinese team. In addition, in nine games for Melbourne, he averaged 18.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists. But on January 4, 2012, Xinjiang Flying Tigers released Patty.

San Antonio Spurs

During his ten-year career with the San Antonio Spurs, he became a crucial part of the team’s success and was widely regarded as one of the best backup point guards in the league. He was known for his sharpshooting ability from beyond the arc, his quickness, and his high energy on both ends of the court.

He joined the Spurs in 2012 and quickly established himself as a key member of the team’s second unit. In his first few seasons with the team, he primarily came off the bench as a backup to Tony Parker, but he also saw playing time alongside Parker as a shooting guard.

His best season with the Spurs came in 2016-17 when he set career highs in points (9.5 per game), assists (3.5 per game), and rebounds (1.8 per game) while shooting 44.0% from the field and 41.4% from three-point range. He also helped the Spurs reach the Western Conference Finals that season.

In August 2021, Patty Mills signed a 2-year contract worth $12 million with the Brooklyn Nets as a free agent. Throughout the 2021-22 NBA season, he proved to be a valuable addition to the Nets.

He played in all 82 games, averaging 12.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, shooting 43.6% from the field and 38.9% from the three-point range. Moreover, he also set a career-high in three-pointers made, with 199. He re-signed with the Nets on a two-year, $14.5 million contract, on the 10th of July 2022.

National team career

Mills first represented Australia at the FIBA Oceania Under-18 Championships in 2005. He then went on to play for the Australian under-19 team in the 2007 FIBA Under-19 World Championships, where he helped his team finish in fourth place.

In 2008, he made his debut for the senior Australian national basketball team at the FIBA Diamond Ball tournament. He was just 19 years old at the time and went on to become a key player for the team.

Moreover, he has represented Australia in numerous international tournaments, including the FIBA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
