Early Life

Michelle Wie West was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, the United States on October 11, 1989. She was born under the zodiac sign Libra and she is currently 34 years old as of 2024. Her full name is Michelle Sung Wie West and her Korean name is Wie Sung-Mi. Moreover, she has a nickname called Big Wiesy among the media and fans. Her parents moved to the United States from South Korea in the 1980s and she is the only child of her parents.

In addition, her father, Byung-Wook Wie, is a former University of Hawaii professor of travel industry management. Her mother’s name is Bo she won the 1985 South Korean women’s amateur golf championship and also competed in the Miss Korea pageant. Additionally, she was born a dual citizen of South Korea and the United States but she renounced her South Korean citizenship.

In June 2007, she graduated and completed her schooling at Punahou School in her hometown. After that, she announced that she was attending Stanford University where there are family ties on December 19, 2006. Professional life

Michelle Wie West began playing golf at the age of four and, at the age of ten, became the youngest player to qualify for the US Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship. During her University years, she used to take leaves of absence for the rest of the year to play professional golf. Until 2014, she was the youngest player to advance to match play in this tournament. At the age of 11, she won both the Jennie K Wilson Women’s Invitational and Hawaii State Women’s Stroke Play Championship in 2001.  After that, she advanced into match play at the Women’s U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship.

She also won the Women’s Division of the Hawaii State Open by thirteen strokes in 2002. Moreover, she became the youngest player to qualify for an LPGA event held in her home state of Hawaii. Moreover, she went on to win the Women’s Amateur Public Links tournament in June 2003. After that, she competed in several tournaments like PGA Tour, Curtis Cup tournament, LPGA Tour, and many more. Later, she announced that she was turning professional a week before her 16th birthday on October 5, 2005. More about her career

After turning professional, she was not a member of any professional tour which required a golfer to be 18. As a result, she only competed in a few LPGA Tour events while on a sponsor’s exemption from 2005 to 2008. However, she was disqualified from her first professional event in the 2005 LPGA Samsung World Championship. She finished her round by unlawfully dropping the ball closer to the hole than its initial lay, according to journalist Michael Bamberger. Moreover, she went on to tally our top-5 finishes on the LPGA tour during the tournament. After that, she participated in both the European and Asian tours.

Due to several issues and injuries, she missed several tournaments and competitions after cuts and withdrawals. She passed LPGA Qualifying School in December 2008 and stated that she still intended to compete in events against men. However, she did not receive a sponsorship to play in the Sony Open in Hawaii for the second consecutive year. After that, she ended up losing to Angela Stanford in her first tournament as an LPGA member in the SBS Open at Turtle Bay. However, she failed to win any major tournaments since becoming a member of LGPA. After that, she won her fourth LPGA Tour event and first major championship the US Women’s Open on June 22, 2014.
