Early Life and Childhood
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan was born in Mississauga, Canada, on December 30, 2001. She is 22 years old and is under the birth sign, Capricorn. She holds Canadian nationality. Career and Professional Life
Maitreyi Ramakrishnan began acting in school plays in Grade 10. Likely, she was a die-hard fan of comics and wanted to pursue her career as an animator for comic creation. However, she changed her mind last year at Meadowvale Secondary School. Eventually, she got the role in “Never Have I Ever” less than a year after that.
Moreover, she deferred her acceptance to the theatre program at York University in Toronto. However, she had initially planned to attend the fall after she graduated high school, so she could shoot “Never Have I Ever” in Los Angeles.
She plays the lead role of Devi Vishwakumar in the rom-com Netflix series “Never Have I Ever”. And, in 2019, she was also chosen by Mindy Kaling out of 15,000 candidates that applied for an open casting call for the show. Moreover, she created her audition tape at a local library by using her mother’s camera.
Eventually, she was asked to send four more videos, before having a screen test in Los Angeles and being offered the role. Ramakrishnan was just 17 at the time of her casting. And she had not yet held a job or acted professionally. However, her casting received significant media attention, especially in Canada. She especially gathered attention due to the nature of the open casting call and for her Tamil Canadian identity.

Furthermore, in 2019, Today named her one of eighteen “Groundbreakers”. It was a list of girls that were breaking down barriers and changing the world. Also, her performance in the show received a lot of positive reviews. Moreover, most of the critics said that it was a “breakout performance”. Likewise, in the year 2020, Ramakrishnan narrated the Children’s Programming portion of the 8th Canadian Screen Awards as well.
