She was born to Swedish parents Lee Dixon Carlson and Mary Joan. Her father Lee was a high school basketball coach and her mother was a hairdresser.

As her father was in the field of sports, she was interested in sports.

The organization provides reconstructive surgeries and related healthcare services to impoverished children and young adults in developing countries.

In January 2010, as an enthusiastic equestrian since age seven, she also lobbied for a bill to prevent both inhumane transport of American horses to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada as well as roundups of wild horses by government authorities.
