He once again started all 18 games in the regular season, the Western championship, and the 94th Grey Cup in 2006. After BC won the Grey Cup in 2006, Bates’ teammates accused him of shattering it. Since 2003, he has been the team’s starting quarterback.

Coaching Career
For the BC Lions from 2012 to 2014, Bates served as the running backs coach and the coordinator of the Canadian College Draft. He was appointed Simon Fraser Clan’s head coach in 2015.
