John started his coaching career at Charleston in the year 1999 as an assistant. In the following year, he was with Eastern Kentucky till 2003 and then spent 3 seasons at St. Bonaventure. Similarly, in the year 2006, he was hired by the VCU where he would act as an assistant until the year 2009.

Similarly, in the year 2015, he was introduced as the new head coach of Northern Kentucky.
