Seattle Mariners

J. J. Putz was drafted in the sixth round by the Mariners in 1999. On August 11, 2003, he made his Major League debut with the Mariners. He became the Mariners’ closer in 2006.

A few weeks into the 2006 campaign, Putz replaced the ailing Guardado as the closer. He had a 2.30 ERA, saved 36 of his 43 chances, and had 104 strikeouts in 78.1 innings pitched.

J. J. Putz continued to develop as a player in 2007. He participated in his first All-Star game and was given the chance to make a save. With a 1.38 ERA, 0.698 WHIP, 82 strikeouts, and 13 walks in 71+2/3 innings, he converted 40 of his 42 save chances.

New York Mets

Putz was acquired by the New York Mets on December 10, 2008, as part of a three-team, 12-player trade that also included pitcher Aaron Heilman, utility outfielder Endy Chávez, and prospects.

Further, On April 6, 2009, he faced the Cincinnati Reds and pitched a hitless inning in his Mets debut. On November 6, the Mets decided not to exercise Putz’s 2010 team option, making him a free agent following a disappointing 2009 campaign.

Chicago White Sox

Putz committed to a $3 million, one-year deal with the Chicago White Sox on December 11, 2009. By throwing 25 straight scoreless innings, Putz established a Chicago White Sox franchise record on July 20, 2010.

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks signed Putz to a two-year, $10 million contract with a $6.5 million club option for 2013.
The Diamondbacks pursued his $6.5 million option on October 20, 2012. In November, Putz returned to the Diamondbacks as a special assistant to club president Derrick Hall.
