Israel Kamakawiwo’ole was a Hawaiian singer, songwriter, musician, and Hawaiian sovereignty activist. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole became famous after his album Facing Future was released.

Early life

Israel Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole aka Bruddah IZ IZ was born on May 20, 1959, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was born to his mother Evangelina Keale Kamakawiwo’ole and father Henry Kaleialoha Naniwa Kamakawiwo’ole. Israel began playing ukelele at the age of 10. He has a brother named Skippy. Israel went to Waianae High School. But, he dropped out of school.

Death

On June 26, 1997, Israel Kamakawiwo’ole died at the age of 38. His entire life, he had suffered from Morbid obesity. Additionally, at a point, he reached 750 pounds. In the middle of the night, he died due to respiratory failure. Israel Kamakawiwo’ole was laid in honor in Hawaii’s Capitol building. Later, his ashes were scattered into the ocean. In conclusion, he left behind his wife and teenage daughter.

Career

Israel dropped out of high school. When he was young, his parents moved to Oahu’s Waianae. There he and his brother performed from the Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau band. From 1976-1991, together they made 21 albums. Unfortunately, in 1982, Skippy died due to a heart attack. In the same year, Israel married his long-time girlfriend. The repertoire is the most famous song of his recorded in 1988.

Additionally, Israel alone played his ukulele and sings a combination of 2 popular songs. Thus, some music critics say spear to his longing for Hawaiian independence. In 1990, Israel released his first single album named Ka’Ano’i. During the release of the song, he worked with Makaha Sons. He was very popular and the sound was way more popular.

In 1993, Israel released his second solo album named Facing Future. Likewise, the album shot to No.1 on the Billboard World Music Charts. The record had sold 500,000 copies, by 2002 and 1st Hawaiian-produced album to go gold. Later, in 2005, it was certified platinum, selling over 1 million copies. Israel became a bona fide star, in Hawaii. Thus, the Facing Future contained the song that would eventually become most associated with him.

In 1999, television commercial shows and movies used the song. Ala E, N Dis Life, IZ In Concert: The Man and His Music are albums by him. But, Facing Future remained top selling Hawaiian music album in the world. Israel was a staunch advocate for Hawaiian independence and Hawaiian cultural and environmental issues. He respected the environment and social justice and warned of the danger of freeways and development.
