Herschel Walker is a former American football player. Herschel Walker won the Heisman Trophy in the year 1982. The former professional player is one of the greatest college football players of all time.

Early life

The 59-years-old Herschel was born on March 3, 1962. He was born in Augusta, Georgia. He was raised in Wrightsville, Georgia. Similarly, he holds an American nationality. Likewise, Herschel Walker’s parents are father Willis Walker and mother Christine Walker. He was born in a family of nine including six of his siblings. The names of his siblings are; Willis Walker Jr, Veronica Richard, Lorenza Walker, Carol Walker, Evangelist Sharon King, and Renneth Walker.

In his childhood, Herschel suffered from obesity and stuttered while speaking. However, his mother motivated him to do better in life and not use those as excuses if he ever fails in life.

Education

Herschel studied in Johnson County High School after he completed his elementary schooling. He was always active in different sports activities during his high school years. Similarly, he started his career as an athlete in high school. He was involved in sports like football, basketball, and track and field.

He even entered several competitions during that period of time. For his further studies, he went to the University of Georgia. Herschel Walker holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia in Criminal Justice.

College Career

His career started in high school, where he found his never before known interest in sports. Herschel Walker is to date one of the most impressive players in the history of college games. He led his team in both the sports football and track and field during his high school years into state championships. While being so good in sports, he never lost his focus on his studies. He was always a good student and did well on his academics as well as performing brilliantly in sports.

After joining the University of Georgia for his further studies, he set a record by being the only player in the history of the NCAA to finish in the top three in Heisman voting in three of his collegiate seasons. Similarly, he was the first-ever freshman to become a first-team-all-American. Herschel led his team from Georgia University to many victories against other teams in various championships. However, he put an end to his college career as a college football player after he turned professional.

Professional career

He signed with the New Jersey Generals in the year 1983. He performed phenomenally in the league, to a point where he dominated the entire league. Herschel set the records in professional football for a single-season. Later in his career, he joined the Dallas Cowboys in the year 1986.  At one of the highest points during his career, the Cowboys traded Herschel to Minnesota Vikings. However, 4 years later, he joined Philadelphia Eagles in the year 1992. he soon left Philadelphia after player for three seasons. He was signed by the New York Giants for a $4.8 million contract.

Herschel’s brought an end to his career as a professional football player in the year 1997 after ending the season with Dallas Cowboys.

Awards and Nominations

Herschel Walker was indeed an extraordinary player. He won numerous awards throughout his entire career as a footballer. The first-ever award he won was the 1982 Heisman award, which is awarded to the most outstanding college football player of the particular year. Similarly, the same year he was also awarded the Maxwell Award. Later in the same year, he also won the Walter Camp Player of the Year.

Likewise, he has won Sporting News College Football Player of the Year. Among many awards won by him, UPI College Football Player of the Year (1982) is also one of them. He was also awarded Chic Harley Award in the year 1982. In the year 2008, he won SI’s All-Time College All-Star as well.
