George Floyd was an African-American man who was killed by a police officer in Minneapolis while arresting him. Moreover, George Floyd worked as a security guard and truck driver. His murder created demonstrations against police brutality particularly against black people.

Early Life

George Floyd was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the United States on October 14, 1973. His zodiac sign was Libra and he was 46 years old at the time of his murder. Moreover, his real birth name is George Perry Floyd Junior.

His father’s name was George Perry and his mother’s name was Larcenia “Cissy” Jones Floyd. Additionally, he grew up with his other four siblings.

After that, he attended South Florida Community College for two years on a football scholarship. In 1995, he transferred to Texas A&M University-Kingsville where he played basketball before dropping out.

Professional life

George Floyd returned to Houston after college in 1995, where he worked as an auto customizer and played club basketball. At the beginning of 1994, he also performed as a rapper under the stage name Big Floyd in the hip-hop group Screwed Up Click.

After that, he became a part of the second rap group “Presidential Playas” and worked on their album Block Party released in 2000. Additionally, he also advised his neighbors to put down their weapons and remember their loved ones and God.

Furthermore, he also served eight jail terms on various charges, including drug possession, theft, and trespass between 1997 and 2005. After that, he faced charges of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon in 2007.

According to investigators, he entered an apartment by impersonating a water department worker and barging in with five other men.

After a seven-year-old robbery victim recognized him from a photo, the police apprehended George Floyd three months later at a traffic stop. Later, he faced five years in prison as part of a plea deal in 2009 and was paroled in January 2013.

Following that, he joined Resurrection Houston, where he mentored young guys and shared anti-violence videos on social media.

After that, he moved to Minneapolis to help rebuild his life and find work in 2014. Later, he worked as a part-time security guard at the Conga Latin Bistro Club and began another job as a delivery driver in 2020.

However, he lost the delivery driver’s job after driving without a valid commercial license and for being involved in a minor crash. After that, he looked for another job when the COVID-19 pandemic hit Minnesota and his financial situation worsened when the club closed.

Death

A White Minneapolis police officer named Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd when the officer pressed his knee to Floyd’s neck on May 25, 2020.

Moreover, the officer kneed him for 9 minutes and 29 seconds while he was handcuffed. In a cellphone video, two other officers restrained Floyd and the fourth officer prevented onlookers from intervening.

He became motionless and had no pulse during the final two minutes but Derek kept his knee on his neck. Derek kept his knee on his neck even after the emergency medical technicians arrived to treat Floyd.

A grocery store employee called the police when he suspected that Floyd used a counterfeit $20 bill. According to the medical examiner, his heart stopped while police restrained him, and his death was a homicide.

After that, the Minneapolis city council approved a settlement of $27 million to the Floyd family following a wrongful death lawsuit on March 12, 2021.

Later, Judge Cahill sentenced Derek to twenty-two and a half years in prison on June 25, 2020. Additionally, many people protested globally against the police officers’ brute force against black suspects.

The day after George Floyd’s death, people began protesting in Minneapolis and developed in cities throughout all 50 US states and internationally. A memorial service for him took place in Minneapolis with Al Sharpton delivering the eulogy on June 4, 2020.

Additionally, several colleges and universities created scholarships in his name including North Central University, Alabama State, Oakwood University, Ohio University, and many more.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and his wife Patty Quillin made a $120 million donation to colleges and universities. Additionally, several artists globally created murals honoring him.

After Floyd’s death, many celebrities and people started using #blacklivesmatter on public and social media platforms.

He struggled financially before his death and worked as a security guard and delivery driver. After his death, the City of Minneapolis settled a wrongful death lawsuit with Floyd’s family for $27 million.
