Cory Spinks is a retired American professional boxer. Cory Spinks is the Undisputed Welterweight Champion who held IBF, WBC, WBA, and The Ring titles from 2003-2005.

Early Life

On the 20th of February 1978, Cory Spinks came into the world in St. Louis, Missouri, the United States of America. He holds American nationality and he is 46 years old as of 2024. In addition, he has a birth sign of Pisces and he belongs to the African-American ethnicity. Additionally, his religious belief is still unclear at the moment.

He is the son of former professional boxer and world champion Leon Spinks and his wife Brenda Glur Spinks. Moreover, his father won the Olympic gold medal in boxing in 1976 and later became the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion of the world by defeating Muhammad Ali in a highly publicized match in 1978.

His mother, Brenda, was also an athlete and competed in track and field events. He grew up with his five siblings; Leon Spinks Jr., Darrell Spinks, Kevin Spinks, Karen Spinks, and Betty Sprinks. In addition, his three brothers, Leon, Darrell, and Kevin are former professional boxers. Sadly, he lost his sister, Betty, in 2021 due to a violent crime in her hometown of St. Louis, Missouri.

Talking about his professional career, Cory Spinks began his boxing career at the young age of 19. He had a successful amateur career, winning several national and international tournaments, including the 1995 and 1997 National Golden Gloves championships. He turned professional in 1997 and won his first 26 fights before suffering his first defeat in 2001.

In 2003, Spinks won his first world title, the IBF welterweight championship, by defeating Michele Piccirillo. He then went on to win the undisputed welterweight championship by defeating Ricardo Mayorga in 2004. Later, he moved up to the junior middleweight division and won the IBF title in that weight class in 2006. He defended the title three times before losing it to Verno Phillips in 2008.

Moreover, he retired from boxing in 2013 with a professional record of 39 wins, 8 losses, and 0 draws. He was known for his defensive skills and boxing IQ, and he was one of the few fighters to hold undisputed titles in two different weight classes.

In the year 2003, he was named “The Ring magazine’s Fighter of the Year.” That same year, he was named the “Fighter of the Year” by ESPN.com. In the year 2010, he was included in the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. Later, he was nominated for the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the year 2019. He won the National Golden Gloves championship twice, in 1995 and 1997.
