George Karl led the Warriors to the Western Conference playoffs in his second season, 1986–87, where they were defeated by the eventual NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. Don Nelson took over as coach of the Warriors the following season, and he had intentions to shift him to small forward. Later, he averaged 25 points and five rebounds per game for five consecutive seasons, from 1988 to 1993.

In addition, the Warriors have made five consecutive postseason appearances. Nelson traded for Chris Webber on NBA Draft Day in 1993, intending to strengthen the Warriors’ frontcourt. The Warriors had a terrific first season with Webber, but he and Nelson began to argue about his role on the team.

Nelson resigned as a result of this, and future coaches perceived Mullin as an injury risk and began to focus the club on Latrell Sprewell. Likewise, he was dealt with the Indiana Pacers at the end of the 1996–97 season in exchange for second-year big Erick Dampier and NBA journeyman Duane Ferrell.

Further, he started all 82 games in his first season with the Pacers, averaging 11.3 points per game and leading the team to the Eastern Conference Finals. That season, he set a career-best in 3-pointers made (107) and led the NBA in free-throw percentage (.939). During Mullin’s second season with the team, Bird began to phase him out in favor of Jalen Rose at small forward. The basketball player re-signed with the Warriors for his final season as a player in 2000–01.
