He played for the Jets for eight seasons before being traded to the Miami Dolphins, where he played for three more seasons before retiring. He was selected by the University of Tennessee, and Middle Tennessee State University.

In the 2004 season, he was signed by the Jets to a contract for seven years and $64.2 million. During his career, he was known for his accuracy and efficiency as a passer, and he led the NFL in completion percentage twice.

He was also named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year twice, in 2006 and 2008, after recovering from two separate shoulder injuries. In addition, he won the William V. Campbell Trophy, the Ed Block Courage Award, PFWA Most Improved Player of the Year, and many more.

On August 8, 2008, he signed a two-year, $11.5 million deal with the Dolphins. On March 5, 2010, he was re-signed by the Dolphins to an additional one-year deal. He had a successful career as a quarterback in the NFL, despite being troubled by injuries throughout his career.

He has also been involved in coaching and mentoring young quarterbacks, and he has worked as a high school football coach in his home state of Tennessee.

In 2018, he was hired to be the coach of Lexington, Kentucky’s Sayre School’s new football team. In coaching for his first year, he led the team to a 3–5 record.
