He was among the candidates for the role, which was eventually filled by Jerry Dipoto. He attended an interview in August 2014 to serve as the San Diego Padres’ general manager, but A. J. Preller was chosen instead. Eppler was one of the five candidates the Arizona Diamondbacks considered when they fired Kevin Towers as general manager in September 2014. The Diamondbacks selected Dave Stewart for the job after Eppler declined to interview for it.
Eppler reapplied to be the Angels’ general manager after the 2015 campaign, following Dipoto’s resignation. On October 4, the Angels recruited Eppler and gave him a four-year contract to serve as their general manager. Matt Klentak, Tim Bogar, and Scott Servais left the Angels’ front office later in October after being hired by different companies.
In addition to creating his own analytics division, Eppler imported executives from New York to the Angels, including special assistant Eric Chavez. With the additions of Shohei Ohtani, Justin Upton, Anthony Rendon, and Andrelton Simmons during the ensuing three seasons, Eppler strengthened the team around Mike Trout. Eppler was given a four-year deal by the New York Mets and hired as their general manager on November 18, 2021.
