The band ‘New Edition’s debut album, ‘Candy Girl,’ was released in 1983 and featured the songs ‘Is This the End,’ ‘Popcorn Love,’ ‘Jealous Girl,’ and ‘Candy Girl,’ which all charted at the top of the American R&B and UK singles charts. The band’s second album was released in 1983 with songs like ‘Cool It Now’ and ‘Mr. Telephone Man’ outperformed their debut album and went double platinum in America. Despite platinum certification and songs like ‘Count Me Out,’ ‘A Little Bit of Love,’ and ‘With You All the Way,’ their 1985 album, ‘All for Love,’ couldn’t equal the popularity of its previous albums.

Due to these reasons, he left the band to go solo and the band kicked him out according to news media. Steven Machat became his manager after signing a deal with MCA Records. His first solo album, ‘King of Stage,’ failed to chart in 1986, but the ballad ‘Girlfriend,’ became a No. 1 R&B hit. In 1988, he went on a tremendously successful tour to promote his album “Don’t Be Cruel”.
However, as the tour progressed, he drew criticism for his crude and offensive behavior. Bobby, his 1992 album, sold 2 million copies but fell short of his prior efforts. ‘Humpin’ Around,’ ‘Get Away,’ and ‘Good Enough,’ as well as ‘That’s The Way Love Is,’ were all hits.
His fourth solo album, ‘Forever,’ was a flop due to poor marketing and his insistence on composing and producing all of the music himself. In 2002, he resurfaced for a duet on ‘Thug Lovin” with rapper Ja Rule.
