Elections: 2020

Moore announced his candidacy in February 2020 for the 1st Congressional District of Utah. In a field of 12 primary contenders, Moore and Weber County Commissioner Kerry Gibson made it out of the Republican nominating convention in second place. Bob Stevenson, a commissioner for Davis County, and Katie Witt, the mayor of Kaysville, were two additional candidates who obtained enough signatures to enter the primary.

Moore received criticism during the party’s nomination process because he did not reside in the designated congressional district. He was living 15 miles outside the district, on Salt Lake City’s east bench. Candidates for Congress are only required to reside in the same state, not necessarily in the district they would be representing. Moore then prevailed in the four-way Republican primary on June 30 with slightly more than 30% of the vote.

Moreover, Moore defeated Darren Parry, the Democratic nominee, in the general election with 69.5% of the vote to Parry’s 30.4%. On January 3, 2021, he was inaugurated, maintaining Republican control over the district since 1980 and making it the first time a holder had not run in 18 years. Despite being elected to one of the most influential political bodies in the world, Moore has stated that the title he values most is “Little League coach.”

2022

Andrew Badger and Tina Cannon were Moore’s two main rivals. In an editorial published in the Deseret News on May 15, State Senate President Stuart Adams supported Moore.

Tenure

Moore participated in a bipartisan vote on May 19, 2021, to create the commission that will look into the January 6, 2021, Capitol storming. The Senate defeated the legislation to create this commission. On January 13, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy argued for the creation of such a commission, saying “[he thought] a fact-finding commission… would be prudent.” The current United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack received Moore’s vote in opposition.

Moore was one of the select few House Republicans who voted both times to keep Liz Cheney as conference chair. Moore said in an interview with the editorial board of the Deseret News that the Republican leadership had not put any pressure on him to vote one way or the other and that it was crucial for them to have “broad appeal.”

According to the STOCK Act, Moore failed to timely disclose stock trades. The stocks in question have an unknown total value that falls between $78,000 and $1.1 million. Moore has admitted to paying the House Committee on Ethics a “late filing fee” in July 2021; the cost of this fee typically starts at $200. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act received Moore’s no vote.
