Spain’s government disclosed Saturday, 14th March, that the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has tested positive for the new coronavirus. Begoña Gómez and the prime minister are in good health and following the instructions of medical authorities at their residence in La Moncloa Palace in Madrid, the government seat.
Earlier that week, two ministers of Sánchez’s Cabinet had tested positive. They were the minister of equality and the minister of regional affairs. The government said both are in good health as well. Other than these, the other members of the Cabinet tested negative.
The Spanish government informed the media of Gómez’s infection shortly after Sánchez gave a nationally televised address to announce a battery of measures his government will take to combat the pandemic during a two-week state of emergency. Before this, Sánchez presided at a seven-hour Cabinet meeting in which all the ministers attended, except for the two who had tested positive.
Health authorities said on Saturday that coronavirus infections have reached 6,391 people in Spain. Half of them are in Madrid since the first case was detected in late January. The number represents a national increase of over 1159 in 24 hours. Spain grapples with the second-worst outbreak in Europe. Additionally, there are 191 deaths, making Spain the second-worst-hit country in Europe after Italy.
Spanish citizens are banned from leaving home except to buy supplies or medicine, or in some cases go to work. Museums, sports venues, and other public spaces were closed, while they restricted restaurants and cafes to deliveries.
