Arthur Levinson is a well-known American businessman. Currently, Arthur Levinson is the chairman of Apple Inc. (2011–present) and CEO of Calico (an Alphabet Inc. venture).

Early Life

Arthur D. Levinson opened his eyes to the world on the 31st of March 1950, in Seattle, Washington, the United States of America. He is 72 years old as of his date of birth and holds American nationality. Moreover, he has a birth sign of Aries and was born in a Jewish family. In addition, Levinson belongs to the Caucasian ethnicity.

He was born to his father Sol Levinson and his mother Malvina Levinson. Further, his parents’ profession is yet to be revealed by him. He is the only child of his parents and has no siblings. He was highly influenced by Carl Sagan’s book ‘Intelligent Life in the Universe,’ as he grew up.

Arthur Levinson – Education

Talking about his academic career, he went to a local private high school near his hometown and completed his high school education. Moreover, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1972. Later, he went to Princeton University and earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry in the year 1977.

Professional Career

After earning a Ph.D. degree, Arthur Levinson served at the ‘Microbiology Department’ of the University of California. There, he was a postdoctoral researcher with Nobel Prize winners Michael Bishop and Harold Varmus.

Initially, his cancer research resulted in the development of a monoclonal antibody called ‘trastuzumab,’ one of the first targeted therapeutics for cancer treatment. Meanwhile, he developed the anti-monoclonal antibody, ‘rituximab,’ that treats hematologic cancers and a kind of epidermal growth factor receptor.

He has also contributed to the development of targeted therapeutics, ‘bevacizumab,’ and ‘ranibizumab,’ which are widely used for treating several cancer-causing viruses in the brain, colon, kidney, and lungs. In addition, he has also made contributions to the study of  age-related macular deterioration. He was also a key player in the creation of the drug ‘Herceptin’ to treat breast cancer. 

Genentech

Levinson was recruited as a research scientist by Herbert W. Boyer, co-founder of the world’s first biotech company, in the year 1980. With his leadership, ‘Genentech’ started investigating various cancer research projects to rate them based on scientific viability, medical need, market potential, and manufacturing economy.
He prioritized the development of new immunology, cancer, and vascular biology treatments. In the year 1989, he became ‘Vice President of Research Technology’ at Genentech.

Worked in several positions for various companies

After a year, he became the ‘Vice President of Research’, ‘Senior Vice President of Research’ in 1992, and finally, the ‘Senior Vice President of Research and Development’ in 1993. In 1995, he was made a new ‘Chief Executive Officer,’ and in 1999, he became the chairman. During that period, he was awarded several awards for his works.
Levinson served on the board of directors of ‘Google’  from 2004 to 2009.
Similarly, he serves on the ‘Board of Scientific Consultants’ of the ‘Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center,’ non-executive ‘Chairman of the Board’ of ‘Amyris, Inc.,’ the ‘Industrial Advisory Board’ of the ‘California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences’ (QB3), the ‘Advisory Council,’ for the ‘Princeton University,’ ‘Department of Molecular Biology,’ the ‘Advisory Council’ for the ‘Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics,’ and is on the board of director of ‘NGM Biopharmaceuticals, Inc.’
In the past, he also served on the board of directors of ‘The Biotechnology Industry Organization,’ (1995-2000), ‘Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America,’ (1997-2001), ‘An Executive Council,’ a member of ‘Technology Network’ (1997-January 2010), and ‘Innovation Advisory Board of U.S Commerce Department’ (2011-December 2012).

CEO of ‘Calico’

Moreover, he joined the board of directors at ‘The Broad Institute of MIT’ and ‘Harvard,’ Cambridge, Massachusetts in the year 2009.  He was named ‘Apple, Inc.’s Non-Executive Chairman of the Board in the year 2011.
He became the chairman of the board replacing Steve Jobs on the 15 of November. He became the CEO of ‘Calico,’ a ‘Google-funded company focussed on health and well-being on the 18th of September 2013.

Awards

Levinson has earned several awards and honors in his professional career. In 1999, he was awarded the Corporate Leadership Awards from the Irvington Institute and the National Breast Cancer Coalition.

Moreover, he earned the Best Manager of the Year by BusinessWeek in the years 2004 and 2005. In addition, he earned America’s Best CEO in the biotech category by Institutional Investor from 2004-2007.

Levinson was awarded the 2006 James Madison Medal for a distinguished career in scientific research and biotechnology by Princeton University. In the year 2006, he warned the ‘The World’s Most Respected CEOs by Barron and ’25 Top CEO by CEO and Founder of Best Practice Institute. He was honored with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation on the 3rd of October 2014.

The family lives in the Seattle area. As far as now, Arthur has not been a part of the controversy and avoids such things which can harm his professional career.
