Following the popularity of these two singles, “Atlantic Records” decided to sign him. In 1953, he released “Mess Around,” which became his first hit with “Atlantic Records.” The next singles he recorded were “It Should’ve Been Me” and “Don’t You Know.”

He released the song “I Got a Woman” in 1954, and it went on to become his first Number One hit. Additionally, it brought him fame across the nation.

This Little Girl of Mine, Drown in My Tears, Lonely Avenue, and Night Time Is the Right Time are just a few of the singles he continued to release.

Aretha Robinson established his own “female singing group” in 1956 under the name “Cookies,” which later changed its name to “The Raelettes.” He released his debut album through “Atlantic Records” in 1957.

The Great Ray Charles, an instrumental album, was also released by him in the same year.

After the 1959 release of his single “What’d I Say,” his career reached its height. He ultimately broke into crossover popular pop music after the song became a big hit. He recorded a version of the country song “Movin’ On” later in the year.
