Albert Pujols is a retired Dominican–American professional baseball first baseman and designated hitter. Albert Pujols’s played a total of 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), he has played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim / Los Angeles Angels, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Early Life

Albert Pujols was born on the 16th of January 1980, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It makes him 44 years old as of 2024 and his birth name is José Alberto Pujols Alcántara.

He has a birth sign of Capricorn and holds Dominican-American nationality. In addition, he belongs to a mixed ethnicity and practices Christian religion. In 2007, he became a United States citizen.

He is the only child of his parents Bienvenido Pujols (father) and his mother’s name is unknown. Moreover, his father was also a  softball pitcher, who later turned alcoholic. His family moved to the United States back in 1996 and began living in New York City. After that, they went to Independence, Missouri, to live with their relatives.

Education

Regarding his academic career, he completed his graduation from Fort Osage High School, Independence in the year 1998. During his school years, he played baseball for his school team and was named an ‘All-State’ athlete twice.

On a baseball scholarship, he joined Maple Woods Community College. During her freshman year, he decided to enter the 1999 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft.

Professional Career

St. Louis Cardinals

In the 1999 MLB Draft, The St. Louis Cardinals selected Albert Pujols with the 402nd overall pick in the 13th round. At first, Albert turned down their offer but finally signed after they increased their bonus from $10,000 to $60,000.

However, he made his MLB debut against the Colorado Rockies on Opening Day in April 2001. Moreover, he signed a $100 million extension of his contract for seven years with the Cardinals with a $16 million option for 2011 in the year 2004.

For the Cardinals, he played 11 seasons and earned numerous awards, honors, and accolades during his 11 seasons at the Cardinals. During his time on the team, he led the World Series champion twice in 2006 and 2011.

In 2012, the Cardinals offered a $ 210-million extension deal of 10 years with Pojols. However, he denied the deal with the team. At the end of the 2011 season, this player became a free agent for the first time in his career. Moreover, the Miami Marlins offered him a 10-year deal but he denied the offer.

Los Angeles Angels

In December 2011, he signed a $254 million deal with Los Angeles for 10 years contract. Moreover, in his debut season for the Angels, he batted .285 with 173 hits, 50 doubles, 30 home runs, 105 RBIs, and 85 runs scored in 153 games. For Angeles, this player batted .258 in 2013, .272 in 2014, .244 in 2015, .268 in 2016, .241 in 2017, and .245 in 2018.

Pujols returned to Busch Stadium in an inter-league series between the Cardinals and the Angels on 21 June 2019 since game 7 of the 2011 World Series. Moreover, he gained a standing ovation after getting an infield base hit.

Similarly, he became the fourth member of the 3,000-hit club to also hit 600 home runs in 2018. He batted 244 with 23 home runs with the Angels in the year 2019. After that, he signed a one-year major league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on the 17th of May 2021.
